Jon Spencer Blues Explosion formed in the ashes of Washington D.C. based punk band Pussy Galore, which also featured Neil Haggerty of Royal Trux. The Blues Explosion fully explore Jon Spencer's brand of punk blues garage rock. Fans of the White Stripes, the Black Keys, and the North Mississippi All-Stars, among others, will find traces of Jon Spencer inspirations. JS is originally from New Hampshire, but has made residence in New York for many years. He attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island where he majored in semiotics (the brand of linguistics concerned with signs and symbols) and was part of the noise rock band Shithaus.

I encountered JS and the Explosion at a mid-90s show at the now defunct Club de Wash in Madison, WI. Let's just say my mind and the rest of the minds in that sweaty little bar were blown, many muttering,  "they're the best live band I've ever seen."

Hard to catch Spencer these days in the States. The Blues Explosion was billed as part of the Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel's UK All Tomorrow's Parties festival in March of 2012 and most recently is doing a string of shows in Italy. Plenty of recorded material available.
